Commissioning Lead – Data Centre | Iceland | Freelance

I’m currently supporting a major data centre project in Iceland with the appointment of an experienced Commissioning Lead for an initial 3–4 month freelance assignment.

The project is currently progressing through installation and commissioning readiness, with the successful candidate joining ahead of execution to take ownership of the overall commissioning coordination.

This is a senior leadership and coordination position rather than a hands-on commissioning role, working across the commissioning agency, contractors, suppliers and internal project teams to drive the programme through Level 4 commissioning and partial handover.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and coordinate the overall commissioning programme on behalf of the client
• Take ownership of Level 4 commissioning, coordinating with contractors responsible for Level 3 activities
• Coordinate the external commissioning agency, contractors, suppliers and internal project/quality teams
• Drive commissioning readiness, including testing plans, supplier information, sequencing and resource/manning requirements
• Manage commissioning interfaces and ensure activities remain aligned with the overall project programme
• Lead commissioning meetings and ensure actions, technical issues and dependencies are driven through to resolution
• Monitor testing progress, commissioning documentation and system readiness
• Provide technical oversight and challenge throughout the commissioning process without being responsible for hands-on field execution
• Drive the initial commissioning package through to partial handover against a tight delivery schedule

Requirements:

• Extensive experience within Commissioning Management / Commissioning Lead positions on complex engineering projects
• Strong understanding of the full commissioning lifecycle from planning and readiness through testing, start-up and handover
• Strong mechanical/HVAC commissioning knowledge, particularly cooling systems
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary contractors, vendors and commissioning resources
• Strong knowledge of commissioning planning, sequencing, testing documentation and system handover
• Ability to understand, review and challenge technical commissioning activities while operating primarily at a coordination/leadership level
• Data centre / mission-critical experience is beneficial but not essential
• Candidates from industrial, Oil & Gas, pharmaceutical or other complex commissioning environments will also be considered
• Solution-oriented, pragmatic and comfortable taking ownership in a fast-paced project environment
• Fluent English
